Naiima Khahaifa

Postdoctoral Fellow

My research is situated at the intersection of labor and carceral geographies and African-American studies, with a focus on mass incarceration and its relationship to correctional workforce integration following the Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 in Western New York State. Through qualitative analysis of life history interviews with Black New York State Correctional Officers, my work begins to disentangle the raced, classed and gendered processes that reproduce prisons and the carceral geographies shaped by them. The purpose of my research is to contribute to Black and feminist theories in critical human geography by analyzing the micro-politics and intricate dynamics of prison spaces. Along with joining the 2022-2024 Guarini Dean's Fellowship Cohort at Dartmouth, I am a 2022-2023 Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellow.
