My major at Dartmouth was actually 'Computer Science modified with Philosophy' but I took enough Geography courses – including participating in the off-campus programme in Mexico - to develop a strong appreciation of how the discipline tackles real-world problems of people, resources and society. This led me to pursue an MA in Geography at Columbia University (shortly before the university closed its Geography department). I then worked for a few years as an environmental information consultant with UNEP in Nairobi; since 1990, I've been in Europe, working with the European Commission in various capacities, all related to environment policy. I still write 'geographer' when I have to indicate my profession on a form.
