Careers in Geography
The Dartmouth Geography curriculum blends social science, physical science, and spatial analysis to understand our world at local, regional, and global scales. You’ll think critically about traditional medicine in a village in southern Africa, analyze the distance of vulnerable populations to emergency medical services, and explore the atmospheric circulation patterns that shape weather around the world. This diversity in topics and methods is reflected in our graduates’ careers. Dartmouth Geography graduates can be found across the workforce, including business (e.g., environmental consulting, geospatial analytics, sustainability management, finance, marketing), nonprofit (e.g., healthcare advocacy, human rights and social justice, international development, public policy and housing), government (e.g., GIS and spatial science, emergency management, urban planning, foreign policy), and academia (e.g., teaching, research, community outreach, administration). The American Association of Geographers Jobs and Careers Center is an excellent website that describes a range of opportunities in geography Finally, Dartmouth Connect, an online networking hub where Dartmouth alumni from around the world offer a helping hand to students at every stage of the career journey, has many geography-relevant groups and mentorship programs.
Preparation for Graduate Study
The Department is committed to encouraging and preparing students to pursue graduate studies in geography and related disciplines. Interested students should contact a geography faculty member to receive mentorship in major design and graduate school preparation.
